Threshold Ramp
Looking for quick, easy, and affordable home accessibility solutions?
Do you, or someone you know use wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers in getting around? You see, having the right accessibility solution can help make their lives easier. You may need to find and install the correct access ramp for maximum maneuverability, ease of use, and safety.
Typically, threshold ramps are also called door threshold ramps. They are designed to allow wheelchair users to smoothly navigate between floors, rooms, or other small distances. They can also benefit people who use scooters and walkers in getting around an area with a sloping surface.
Different Types of Threshold Ramps
Threshold ramps can be made of either metal, heavy-duty plastic, or rubber. For metal threshold ramps, high-strength, durable aluminum is ideally used. The material won’t rust or corrode, and it has an extruded slip-resistant surface, for superior traction. Aluminum threshold ramps’s heights are usually adjustable. Rubber and/or heavy-duty plastic threshold ramps are made from 100% recycled materials. These rubber threshold ramps or sturdy plastic strips are exceptionally high-quality and can hold capacities of up to 1,000kg. They are durable, strong, nonslip, and flexible, and are perfect for getting up any small step.
Design and Style
Most rubber, plastic, and metal threshold ramp’s design allow them to sit flush against the lip of a curb or the threshold of a door. In general, threshold ramps are available from one to six inches high. Additionally, they’re very lightweight and can be best used on both the inside and outside of a doorway.
How do you build a threshold ramp?
With their wide variety of sizes, colors, and materials, threshold ramps can be used whether indoors or outdoors. They are also available in both permanent and temporary models, so you can choose the right ramp to meet your needs. They are great for use in doorways, across flooring transitions, and even over uneven terrain or small curbs.
Easy Installation
Most threshold ramps don’t need any special tools for installation, it is easy to use and transport. Even those products available in the market are so easy to assemble and install using only a screwdriver. A simple installation guide can help you add or remove interchangeable extensions to accommodate thresholds from 0.75 inches to 6.25 inches. It comes with a pivoting flap that typically attaches to the top of the ramp for 0.25 inches of additional adjustability. Moreover, holes are pre-drilled in the foot section and have an adjustable flap for anchoring.
How do you measure a threshold ramp?
If you’re finding the right ramp for your application the EZ-ACCESS Incline Calculator can help. When you use the tool as instructed, it will provide you with the ramp length needed based on the rise and incline requirements. After the Calculator has provided you with the length of ideal ramp that you require, it will recommend products that are available in that length. If you want to do it yourself, use a tape measure to take the height of the ramp across the width of the door. This is to make sure that it is even across the whole thing. Take note of external doors, curbs, or skirting if there are any as these will make it quite tricky to take a straight measurement. You can take a phone or a book and put the seer in the intact measurement and download an app on your phone so you can use it to get an accurate measurement. Standard ramps are 900 wide but if you need a bit wider, you may consider having wings or flaps on each side. This will allow for the person to approach the ramp from different directions. We understand that getting the ramps right can sometimes be quite tricky to do. So if you are unsure, call us today and we offer you free measurement and installation service.
What is a safe slope for a ramp?
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), wheelchair ramps must have a slope of no steeper than 1:12 so that people in wheelchairs can go up and down without assistance. This means that the wheelchair ramp must have a length of 12 inches (one foot) per inch of rises in the threshold. As an example, a 25-inch threshold height door requires a ramp of 25 inches and a 5’x5′ threshold platform. If the threshold is 30′′ or more off the ground, a resting platform should be installed between them. ADA guidelines require a resting platform for every additional 30′ run of the ramp. Therefore, when the threshold is 34 inches high, one resting platform is required, when the threshold is 62 inches high, two resting platforms are needed.
Why are measurements so important?
To ensure that the slope of the handicap ramp is accurate, ground slope measurements are needed. Generally, if the ramp is sloping upward from the door threshold, it will probably require less ramp material than if it is flat or sloped downward. The ramp will therefore be less expensive if the ground slopes upwards, and more expensive if it slopes downwards.
